However, those who did not know Latin would also benefit, by comparing one vernacular with versions in other languages. Canini specifically recommended contrasting with the best translations in French and Spanish because “the help of these two sisters” would make it easier to express in Italian what Tacitus wanted to say in his obscure and difficult Latin, the mother language of all three vernaculars117. According to Canini, translations were not simply vehicles for the unlearned. He assumed that people who could read the original Latin also used translations.
